A Weekend Away

Last weekend, Brandon and I took some much needed R&R at a breathtaking bed and breakfast in Gloucester, Virginia. It is called North River Inn, and it is a historical property that dates back to 1656. The estate is surrounded by water on three sides and farm land on the fourth, with spralls of grassy lawns in between.

Brandon and I were amazed at the number of trees that seemed to have been there from the time the buildings were constructed, and it occurred to us that we really didn't have any concept of time when standing next to a 300 year old maple. What stories it could tell. What events they had lived through. A human could not fathom having all that in one lifetime, and we seem to age so tragically. These trees were weathered but stately, patriarchal, stoic, yet compassionate and nurturing.

The water it bordered on was the North River, which is near the Chesapeake Bay, and the evidence of salt water was obvious with the sea of jelly fish near the dock.

We could have spent all day wandering around the gardens, hopping from shady spot to scenic view, but we decided to torture ourselves and go to Busch Gardens for a few hours. And that's all we could handle. We may have that out of system for a while. We arrived home Sunday to a smirking Sonya, who appeared to do well in our absence (first time away from Mommy), but tuckered out Grandma Thompson completely!
