Memories
Funny how us Thompsons get together on military holidays. The Fourth, Memorial, this time was the latter and there were many memories made. For the first time in nearly 2 years, all of us were together...including the elusive eldest Treva!!! Mom flew in from NC, Dad from Mississippi, Treva drove up with her boy Josh from Nashville, while us KY Kats hosted alongside lil' sis Robyn. It was a great visit with all of us and we were able to show Treva our new home for the first time.
Jacobson Park is one of our favorite play spots. It has an enormous castle climbing structure that is easy to get lost in, and easy to lose yourself. Dad seemed to have quite the perch on this swing, blissfully swaying from childhood to grandfatherhood as he watched his own flash around the castle, oblivious of time or sore tendons. We chased Sonya all around, forgetting how much fun it was to forget yourself and just be, just play, neither coming nor going, just as you are in this whirlwind of Neverland. To be a kid forever may not be ideal, especially since we'd never have these memories to reminisce upon. That taste is just as sweet.
Much to everyone's delight, Sonya seemed to have broken down most of the self-constructed barriers surrounding her Pap. She spent many a moment near his lap, listening to stories, watching shows, always slightly out of reach. Pap shocked us all on their last day here when we visited Jacobson Park. Sonya wanted to wander towards the waddling ducks, so Pap swooped down and snatched her hand in his. He never faltered, she never flinched. It's all over now! All I have to say is if my daughter learns how to sail before I do, no fair!
The weekend was such a wonderful time. Sounds cheesy, but it was. Sonya had a chance to form a lasting impression of her Aunt Treva, who she talks about on regular occasion. She accepted her into her own immediately, somehow sensing she was blood and close to all of our hearts. Drinking from her water bottle was a real hit. Who knew she could do that?!?!
There is always fun to be had at the park, especially when Daddy is involved! He's got those muscles on loan that make you feel like you could conquer the world, 6 feet from the ground, scaring Mommy half out of her senses, thank goodness for Daddy holding on! This little girl is growing up so fast. And then... all it will be...is a memory...
